ALAIN SILBERSTEIN

We did not have an appointment, but Mr. Silberstein himself greeted us and accepted to spend over an hour discussing with us. Here is a man passionate about his work, with a great love and respect for artisans and craftsmen of all sorts and the pieces he showed us were all mixtures of design, horology and art!

Mr. Silberstein makes watches fun, the designs may me somewhat difficult to accept for your every day WIS but its not just design, there are well finished movements too!

Here are some of Mr. Silberstein's pieces:

This year's big hit is titanium with white straps:

Note the beautiful diamond encrusted case side:

A prototype: engraving on mother of pearl: fascinating!!!

Engraving on the case of a piece where the time indication is read through an aperture on the case side:

Same watch but with enameling (note the gorgeous colours):

This cloisonné enamel dial is maybe the nicest I have ever seen.

Open faced tourbillons (even the bridges are fun!):

Tourbillon with lacquered dial (the dial is somewhat raised and therefore gives great depth to the tourbillon cage).

Mr. Silberstein also makes special edition music boxes with automaton. Here is a egg shaped wooden sculpture laid with thin layers of gold.

The pin keeping the box closed is in fact a watch!

Open box:

A singing bird in white gold with diamond encrusted wings sings a beautiful tune when a push piece in pressed (a true work of art!).

Finally, the Karavanne enables Mr. Silberstain to play with new forms. The watch on top gives hours whereas on the bottom we have a second time zone (the moon is the seconds indicator!).

This new model should be presented with different complication with always the time indicator on top and new complications (ex: chronograph) on bottom.

Right after parting with Mr. Silberstein we headed for another brand created by a designer: Marc Newson's Ikepod

IKEPOD

As usual the Ikepod booth was very impressive, the watches were displayed in huge balls made of black plastic hanging from the ceiling!

This year Ikepod was only introducing a new perpetual calendar watch. Doesn't rock my boat at all.

Ikepod has also decided to supply croc straps with its watches.
